Breastfeeding Support
The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF recommend that the first breastfeed is initiated within the first hour of birth and infants be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life. Breastfeeding provides benefits for both the mother and child, promoting healthy growth and development extending into adult life.
This recommendation is based off evidence that breastmilk, which is clean, safe and full of antibodies, supplies all the necessary nutrients your baby requires, but is also proven to provide protection against allergies and childhood illness.
Regardless of your feeding choices and circumstances, everyone will be supported and educated to care for their baby in the safest way. At Echuca Regional Health we acknowledge a family’s right to make an informed decision on how they choose to feed their newborn.
We know that learning to breastfeed can have its challenges and takes time and patience. At Echuca Regional Health we are here to support you through the breastfeeding journey and guide you along the way to promote a positive experience. All midwives can provide education to help establish feeding practices that can be utilised on discharge to home as well.
